Kandersteg
Kandersteg is one of the few villages in the Bernese Oberland which has preserved its typically Swiss character. Visitors are enchanted by the relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the beautiful, unspoilt countryside. Excellent facilities abound for crosscountry skiers with eight trails winding around Kandersteg and further trails to Sunnbu¨hl and Lake Oeschinen reveal the most beautiful winter scenery.
An ideal starting point for beginner skiers is Oeschinen which has a number of drag lifts and easy blue and red runs to help you gain confidence. The Sunnbu¨hl area on the opposite side of the valley has the highest slopes at 2,000m and is also suitable for beginners and early intermediates. More advanced skiers w ill find the 33km of pisted runs at Lauchernalp in the Lötschental more challenging and for those who wish to travel further afield, the slopes of Adelboden- Lenk-Frutigen offer even more scope.
Non-skiers are particularly well catered for with numerous activities to choose from including panoramic winter walks, guided snowshoe walks, horse-drawn sleigh rides, curling, ice skating or why not just enjoy the views from one of the many sun-drenched terraces.
Après ski is relaxed and informal and is concentrated largely around the hotels and restaurants. The tourist office also organises many special events including ice climbing and concerts in the evening.
