Zermatt
Zermatt is a virtually car-free village, offering plenty of entertainment and some of the best mountain restaurants around the Matterhorn. You will find a blend of the quaint and the sophisticated with a wealth of restaurants ranging from pizzas to haute cuisine. Old timber-framed houses line the narrow lanes alongside chic boutiques and après ski bars. The Papperla, Hennu Stall and the Olympia Stubli are the most popular après ski bars in town, whilst Elsie’s bar is famous for its champagne and oysters.
Dominated by the magical Matterhorn and three interconnecting ski areas providing 200km of prepared pistes, Zermatt is a mecca for intermediate and advanced skiers. Add to this the potential to descend into the Italian resort of Cervinia, and the vast
areas of excellent off-piste and heliskiing possibilities, you can begin to see why Zermatt has such an excellent reputation.
There are four main access points onto the ski area from the village. There is a 8-seater gondola linking Furi to the Gornegrat ski area. The Gornergrat railway takes 42 minutes to climb from the village to 3100m, where you will find superb slopes for all abilities.
From the edge of the village, the Matterhorn Ski Paradise is accessed by the 8-seater gondola lift via Furi to Schwarzsee in just 10 minutes! The Sunnegga Express funicular provides the final means of transport onto the ski area from the heart of the village.
This funicular opens up the Sunnegga-Blauherd-Rothorn slopes where fans of gourmet food will find two of the best mountain
restaurants in Switzerland, ‘Chez Vrony's’ and the ‘Findlerhof’.
